Hi I've been given contradictory info by the support team about IPv6, they told me it wasn't available at all for this device which absolutely stunned me. A few days later IPv6 started to work and has been stable for a few weeks. It would be good to get some clarity about this. In the same way, the remarks over this forum about bridge aren't entirely clear, is that possible or not? Thanks!

The Connect Box 3 always comes with IPv6 by default.

Since you have a fiber connection (Fiber) there is unfortunately no bridge mode available for the Connect Box 3 Fiber. The only way to use your own router on fiber is to set up a DMZ in the modem settings (access usually via 192.168.1.1) so that the data traffic is forwarded directly to your hardware. For this to work however you should first contact the support team (0800 707 707) to request a switch from IPv6 to IPv4 because otherwise the DMZ setup will not work.

That’s interesting, because it doesn’t match what I’m actually seeing.

IPv6 has been working reliably on my Connect Box 3 Fibre for several weeks now, despite previously being told by Sunrise support that IPv6 wasn’t available on this device.

Likewise, I have been successfully using the DMZ with my own ASUS router while IPv6 is enabled, so in my case DMZ certainly does work.

I think the real question is therefore what configuration Sunrise has actually applied to my connection, because it doesn’t appear to match either what support previously told me or what you’ve described here.

It would be helpful if someone from Sunrise could clarify exactly which operating modes and IPv4/IPv6 configurations are currently supported on the Connect Box 3 Fibre. It was this lack of clarity that I was trying to resolve because the posts here are apparently not consistent with what I see or what support told me. They’re not consistent with my expectations either but that ship has long sailed 😀

Cosmo24 Your last statement is correct. Normally, you would have both protocols enabled at the same time. However, since we experienced an issue with DualStack IPv6, IPv6 has been disabled—in other words, you won’t be assigned a public IPv6 address. You can find out if you have DualStack by going to the DHCP section in your modem settings. If both IPv6 and IPv4 are listed there, you’re using DualStack.

Last night the storm caused a short power outage here. The connect box rebooted and at 7am I noticed that the phone was disabled and IPv6 had gone again.

A reboot restored the phone but IPv6 has not returned.

It’s really not easy to know what is supposed to work or not. And the general functionality of this device is dramatically lower than the DSL internet box it replaced.

Unfortunately, IPv6 has disappeared yet again.

At this point I’m no longer just frustrated by the intermittent IPv6 service. I’m frustrated that nobody seems able to say with any confidence what the actual problem is.

Is it the network? Is it the gateway? Is it a firmware bug? Is it a configuration issue? Depending on who you ask, the answer seems to change.

The supplied gateway has, in my experience, significant limitations, so it’s easy to suspect the hardware. Equally, this could be a network-side issue. The point is that I shouldn’t have to guess, and neither should Sunrise support.

My home network is also my SOHO network. I need to know whether IPv6 is a supported, reliable service that I can build my network around, or whether it’s effectively experimental.

Can Sunrise please provide a definitive answer:

Is IPv6 officially supported on this connection?
Why does it repeatedly disappear?
Is the problem in the gateway, or in the Sunrise network?
What is the permanent fix?

Right now, the only thing that seems consistent is the inconsistency. IPv6 comes and goes, and Sunrise’s explanation appears to do the same.

At the moment, we are experiencing a technical issue affecting Dual Stack connectivity. As a result, you are currently not being assigned an IPv6 address. Our engineers are working on a solution. As soon as I receive more information, I will provide an update here.

- Is the problem in the gateway, or in the Sunrise network?
I’m not aware of the exact technical reason for this limitation.

- What is the permanent fix?
Unfortunately, I don’t have that information either.
