Internet Speed and Modem Position

Hi, I moved into a new apartment and the Fibre connection is inside a utility panel at the entrance of my apartment. It means I have to use WIFI for connection of laptops, mobiles etc but speed is much much lower than the 10Gb I paid for, its approx 80mb, any ideas?

A WLAN connection is always way below the 10Gbit/s Fibre offers. Even with WLAN extenders the speed won’t increase as much.

Now we do not know the layout of you new apartment. Are there any ethernet cables running from the utility panel to the rooms? If yes do you know what class the cables are? For 10Gbit/s you’ll need CAT6-cables.

Also what are your needs? Do you need a connection this fast or is a speed at around 1.5Gbit/s per device also suitable?

Hi,

There are internet cables running to each room, I connected cable 1 to the modem and plugged my firestick into the wall outlet in the corresponding room, I ran a speed test and the best with the wired version was 84Mbits, that’s a long long long way short of 1Gb let alone the 10Gb I paid for

Ohhh my…. I got some really bad news for you.

Your Ethernet-Setup only allows 100Mbit/s.

You’ll see that the green, red and blue plugs are different. Green and blue 4 lines and red one has 8 lines. This cable does split the signal.

The outlets are both hooked to the jack where the red cables are plugged in. One outlet is for ethernet the other for a phone. The cable is split on the outlets.

You should call your landlord and ask them, if they are willing to replace the outlets in the rooms, this way you can have at least 1Gbit/s ethernet. looking at the cable 2.5Gbit/s should be possible too.

Another Problem might be the front plate, but maybe not. I am not an electrician but we did discuss this problem in the community some time ago.

But I dont really understand, when I inputted my address to Sunrise they told me I was good for 10Gb Fibre???

I have a the Fibre cable in that closet too and the Sunrise box and automated system recognised it?

Yes, but Sunrise doesn’t know about your Lan-setup. All they care for is the one fibre running into your apartment.

As I said, I am not an electrician.

From what I see, all that needs to be done is remove the LAN/phone module and install the Gigabit Lan module. Then put the red/green/blue cable aside and use regular ethernet cables to connect the Fibre Box with the outlets.

Any electrician should be able to do the job. But it is best to ask your landlord. You should keep the old modules, once you move out they might need to be reinstalled.

BarryMc When you open the cabinet containing the patch bay (where all the LAN cables are), there should be a sticker on the door with the installer’s name and address. You can ask them if they can make the modifications and how much it will cost.

I talked to a friend who runs an electrical business.

According to him: The modules are “plugs”. All you need to do, is remove the front cover (untie single screw in the middle of the outlet). Untie the screws on the left and right side of the module and you’re able to pull the module out. Then push in the new module (Gigabit Lan module) and fasten the screws to hold the module in place. Reinstall front cover. Job done.

One module will be Fr. 35.00 to 40.00.

Nothing needs to be changed in the cabinet.

But there might be another way. One thing you can try before replacing anything. In the cabinet, run a regular ethernet-cable from the Connect Box to the plug labeled with one.

Take the red/green/blue-cable and use it on the wallsocket labeled one. the green jack goes into the left and the blue one goes into the right. The red one goes into your computer or device. If you run a speedtest you should get aprox. 900Mbit/s.
