If you don’t see an option for Port Forwarding, your Connect Box 3 FIBRE might get a public IPv6 address.

Please call 0800 707 707 and request a change to IPv4. After the change has been made, you should see the option on the Connect Box 3.

I just asked for instructions about how to open port 443, i.ey what to enter in the empty fields.

Create a new rule

Local IP = IP of the local device you want the port to be forwarded to.
Enter the Port Number or Port-Range and select the Protocol.

Then Add rule and it’s done.

Btw: 0800 707707 didn’t help. They tried with some numbers and it seemed to work, but when I checked with a free port checker from the internet it still confirmed that port 443 was closed. Hence, those numbers (21 ×4) where wrong.

Opening ports is always an invitation. If you know what you’re doing and are aware of the risks, you should be fine.

Thanks for raising awareness. Basically, I installed a QNAP server at home to backup my OneDrive files. I want to be able to access it from remote (from the web) but I can’t. I was told I need to open port 443 to make this possible.

A QNAP NAS should never ever ever be exposed to the internet!!!!!!! That’s not just an invitation, you also leave the door open for everyone. Close this Port immediately. You might want to google +QNAP +deadbolt.

I run two QNAPs myself. You have to use a different connection to be secure. Access to a QNAP only over VPN!!!

Thank you. Gosh. I am so confused now. Everybody says something different and most of the time nobody raises awareness on critical issues like the one you mentioned. Technicians get their money to make it work without knowing themselves the consequences.
Now what? I’d like to throw everything out of the window but I need to solve the problem. You say to access QNAP from remote only with a VPN. No clue how to do this. Glad to discuss separately if you want or to stop here if it bothers you.

You could use QVPN-Service to connect to the QNAP from abroad.

Things you’ll have to prepare:

create an address reservation for your QNAP NAS on the Connect Box 3
get a DynDNS-Service running (I recommend using selfhost)
install QVPN-Service on your QNAP NAS
download Wireguard Client for Windows

To assign a reserved IP address to your QNAP, follow the instructions by Sunrise

Once you created an account with selfhost, you can use the QNAP to keep it up to date.

Setup QVPN by following the instructions from QNAP. You’ll also find the instructions to setup Wireguard client on your Windows machine there.

Now create a port forwarding rule. If you haven’t changed the default Wireguard Port, forward Port 51820 to the IP address of the QNAP. Protocol will be UDP.

This would be the way to create a “somehow” secure connection to access your QNAP when you’re not at home.
