Traffic policy towards Netflix in other countries?

Hello,

Since 6 weeks or so I have detected that I can’t access Netflix content from other countries and I think some kind of Traffic policy/shapping is being applied by UPC.

I’m using a service (unotelly) which redirect DNS in order to acces Netflix base on other countries, but this has stopped working as expected and now all the content devlier by Netflix through this service is really slow or with a verly low quality.I can only see netflix properly if I do not use the service (hence I am enforce to watch the Netflix Swiss content) or if I select Switzlerand as the country.

I thought this was an issue with the service provided by Unotelly, but to check I tried the same with other providers (Unblock-us, TVUnblock) and I got exactly the same behavior.

I even contancted Unotelly in order to confirm the issue was not due to them and after some troubleshooting sessions, checking different DNS server provided by them, we figured out the issue was not due to their service.

Can you please confirm Cablecom is appliying or not trafiic shapping or similar?

Hi Frida,

Could you quantify the timescales involved please? I would say that the resolution was “due” in December last year. I am paying UPC for a 250 Mb connection which should be (and used to be) able to stream the 2160 lines of 4K TV from Netflix. Now I’m lucky to get 480, usually 384. Will our monthly bills be reduced by a similar ratio to compensate us?

This looks like UPC is passing the ball to Netflix, but in the meantime the user are already for months with a very poor service, which it is totally unaceptable as we regularly pay our bills with no issue.

I too am suffering from this problem and to be honest I think a move to Swisscom will be warranted (no issues with them, I can attest) if you cannot fix the issue. Six weeks and doesnt seem to be any news of a solution. What is the latest on this?

I’m also having the same issues. Netflix will stream but at very low quality and will never reach/buffer to a clear HD picture. Other streaming services work fine. I hope a solution is being worked on.

This is really interesting. I am wondering what actions UPC is going to take about this as they do not have control on its peer network. I hope they can really make presure to get this fixed

I can also confirm the same thing: Netflix access worked fine until sometime in November and since then only the worst looking screen resolution comes (barely) through even though I have a 100Mbit UPC Cablecom contract.

Please correct this error instead of replying to many threads with the same problem with “we’re looking into it”. At some point the “looking” should be finished and the “resolving” done…and especially you shouldn’t try to blame Netflix or anyone else if it’s only a problem with UPC Cablecom and with no other ISP!

I can confirm that I have the same issue.

I have a quite large TV screen and with such low rates, the quality of the stream has become just aweful this last month or so. It hurts my eyes :smileyfrustrated:

Please, fix this!

I did not know this website from Netflix, but it is very useful tool.

In the graph I attach here, I can see than in October 2015 the amount Mbs started dropping, just in the moment I started facing issues., very big coincidence .-) Previous to that, it worked very well.

Righ now UPC is the lowest one and it has dropped quite a bit since october (4.12Mbs) to (3.36Mbs).

Obviously something is going on….

With a bit of surprise (for me, but certainly not for you), upc cablecom is the one which has the more issues with Netflix !? 3.36mbps is not enough if you want to see some series in high definition (HD) and also in standard definition (SD).

Did your colleagues check if there is any routing issue or not optimal route?

This is really strange because it used to work perfectly fine until November, and then suddenly the problems started

Also, I have checked with other network provider in CH and it works perfectly fine, so I think something is going on in the network.

Having asked my expert colleagues, I can confirm that we adhere to the publicly accessible code of conduct at all times. In principle, this means that we do not block or discriminate against any Internet contents. Our network infrastructure is already equipped to deal with ever-increasing data volumes and has more than enough free capacity. However, we are not in the position to say which data connections Netflix will use between their servers and ours and which content will be made available to which customer. So therefore this is an issue which we cannot control. But maybe the Community can offer some tipps & tricks?
