Hello everyone

I’m planning to upgrade my home network. I’m looking to set up a PFsense as my firewall router (I’d like it to handle DHCP and DNS too). Since I’m working with a budget, it’d be great to buy the least amount of gear necessary.

I’ve included a diagram below which shows the current network setup and my proposed changes.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Do you think it’ll work? What are your ideas?

I have a few questions:

1. In Bridge Mode, what exactly is disabled in the Connect Box? Is it just DHCP, that is disabled, or does it also disable DNS?

2. Can the PFsense be the “first” device connected to the sunrise infrastructure? (see variant 1)

Nein, das “Problem” konnte noch nicht gelöst werden… Habt Ihr vielleicht irgend ein Input dazu?

pluh_pluh Variant 2 will work. Variant 1 does not work, as you cannot connect any external modems or other devices to our cable network without our modem in between.

I can answer your questions as follows:
In bridge mode, the modem functions purely as a modem. DHCP is deactivated, firewall is deactivated, WIFI is deactivated, DNS is obtained automatically if a PC is connected directly to the modem and obtains a public IP.

However, if you now connect your router (from the modem LAN to your router WAN), your router takes over all the deactivated functions mentioned above.
