Dear Community,

The 2.5 Gbit speed upgrade has been completed throughout Switzerland. On this page we inform you about some requirements for the speed rush. This thread is mainly dedicated to the hardware that must fulfill the requirements for 2.5 Gbit speed. In addition, non 2.5 Gbit capable devices can also benefit from the higher overall speed if several are used simultaneously.

Prerequisite for the hardware (modems), as well as the technology for fiber optics:
- Connect Box 3 HFC
- Connect Box 3 Fiber (only via XGS PON connection)
- Sunrise Internet Box Fiber (only via XGS PON connection)
- Internet Box Zyxel Fiber (only via XGS PON connection)

Explanation modem connection, only marked LAN connections have 2.5 Gbit

We have marked our compatible modems with the appropriate 2.5 Gbit connection in the first image of the thread. This means that the marked LAN connection must be used if you have one or more devices that require 2.5 Gbit.

Connection type 1: DIRECT CONNECTION

1.1 Your network card, which is installed in the laptop or computer, must provide at least 2.5 Gbit full duplex in order to achieve the speed in the network.

1.2 The network cable (LAN cable) must be at least Cat6 to achieve the 2.5 Gigabit speed.

1.3 Your hard disk should be able to write / read at least 300mb/s (=2.4 Gbit) so that the downloaded data can also be written to the hard disk at gigabit speed. As conventional HDDs are generally too slow, we recommend using an SSD to achieve the desired speed.

Connection type 2: via SWITCH

2.1 The LAN cable connected from the LAN 4 port of the modem to the switch should be at least Cat6.

2.2 The switch connected from the modem should be capable of 2.5 Gbit full duplex. When purchasing a switch, we also recommend that it can process the 2.5 Gbit per LAN port and not in total.

2.3 Your network card, which is installed in the laptop or computer, must be capable of at least 2.5 Gbit full duplex in order to achieve the speed in the network.

2.4 The network cable (LAN cable) must be at least Cat6 to achieve the 2.5 Gigabit speed.

2.5 Your hard disk should be able to write / read at least 300mb/s (=2.4 Gbit) so that the downloaded data can also be written to the hard disk at gigabit speed. As conventional HDDs are generally too slow, we recommend using an SSD to achieve the desired speed.

Connection type 3: via multimedia box / patch bay

3.1 The patch bay / multimedia box that is connected from the modem should be equipped with 2.5 Gbit full duplex LAN connections. If you are not sure what power the distribution box has to the corresponding network sockets, we recommend contacting the electrician who connected the multimedia box. The installer’s sticker is usually visible on the multimedia cabinet.

3.2 The network sockets that are connected from the multimedia box / patch bay must be designed for 2.5 Gbit or higher in the home. If you are not sure exactly what capacity the network sockets have, we recommend that you contact the installer.

3.3 Your network card, which is installed in the laptop or computer, must be capable of at least 2.5 Gbit full duplex in order to achieve the network speed.

3.4 All network cables (LAN cables) must be at least Cat6 to achieve the 2.5 Gigabit speed.

3.5 Your hard disk should be able to write / read at least 300mb/s (=2.4 Gbit) so that the downloaded data can also be written to the hard disk at gigabit speed. As conventional HDDs are generally too slow, we recommend using an SSD to achieve the desired speed.

Connection type 4: via own router / bridge mode

4.1 The LAN cable, which is connected from the LAN 4 port of the modem to the WAN port of your router, should be at least Cat6.

4.2 The router WAN connection must be capable of at least 2.5 Gbit.

4.3 Your network card, which is installed in the laptop or computer, must be capable of at least 2.5 Gbit full duplex to achieve the network speed.

4.4 All other LAN cables that connect other devices from your router should be Cat5e for 1 Gbit and at least Cat6 for 2.5 Gbit. In addition, your router, which also has LAN ports (normally LAN 1 - 4), must also provide Gbit.

4.5 Your hard disk should be able to write / read at least 300mb/s (=2.4 Gbit) so that the downloaded data can also be written to the hard disk at Gigabit. As conventional HDDs are generally too slow, we recommend using an SSD to achieve the desired speed.

Connection type 5: via WIFI

5.1 Due to technical limitations, speeds of 2.5 Gbit cannot be achieved via WLAN. The maximum speed that can be achieved is between 1.1 Gbit and 1.6 Gbit. In order to achieve these high transfer rates, the end devices in the WLAN must be compatible with the WIFI 6 standard.

Influences that can impair the speed:

Virus scanners
Virus scanners can affect the speed of the Internet as they check the downloaded data in real time. If the virus scanner can no longer follow, the data packets are placed in a queue and continuously rescanned, which can lead to a loss of speed.

Adapters / docking stations
LAN adapters, which are operated via a USB connection, for example, can reduce the speed as they are not designed for 2.5 Gbit speed or do not have full duplex - i.e. they do not support a guaranteed simultaneous speed (upload/download).

Firewalls (software or hardware)
Firewalls scan the network and, depending on the settings, all data packets. This can lead to the CPU of the hardware on which the firewall is operated (as in routers) offering insufficient performance and therefore the 2.5 Gbit speed cannot be achieved. We recommend checking the user manual or asking our community. If your router / firewall is running services that scan the network, we recommend deactivating these services, which may have the following names: AiProtection, Traffic Analyzer, Web History, Adaptive QoS, Game Boost, Web & Apps Filter, Bandwidth Monitoring, Mobile Game Mode.

Deactivating the services - one after the other and checking the performance in between - could reveal the cause that is throttling the speed.

Hello,

I am confused with your article. I called Sunrise hotline who just told me the 2.5gbps upgrade only concerns the cable connection and not fiber connection customers. Yet in your article you mention fiber optic and the fiber optics modems??

I do have the device AX7501-B0, and only have 1gbps.

Can you please check?

Henrymote The answer of the hotline is not correct. What we wrote in the community applies. In your case, since you have the 10 Gbit offer anyway, the 2.5 Gbit upgrade does not apply.

Daniele_Sunrise Thanks, but in my case I have “We Home L”, and in the product description it says: “Download speed Up to 10 Gbit/s Upload speed Up to 10 Gbit/s”.

But I barely get 1GBit/s…Since the beginning and despite the upgrade which recently occured on our lines (email sent to all Sunrise Customers).

I thought from your article that since I have 1GBit, I would be upgraded to 2.5GBit…?

Can you please clarify?

Edit: In my Sunrise router setting , I do see those interfaces:

10G LAN 2500M/Full (to my router)
PON10Gbps/10Gbps (from Fiber cable in the wall)

Yet my speed tests from the router shows:
765.88Mbps Download
1116.71Mbps Upload.

Its my understanding that should be up to 1500Mbps when having a 10Gbps connection, maybe im wrong?

The connection in my area is very good according to them.

My local setup sufficient (cat6 cable).

We don’t know why I’m far from full theoretical speed (50%) in downloads mostly.

They will send me another modem, the same AX7501-B0, to test…

The support said I will receive another Zyxel modem, but instead I got a Connect Box 3 Fiber.

Since its less configurable than my Zyxel ax7501-b0, I just decided not to open it and I will return it directly.

One can’t change the DNS so its not suitable for me.

I did some more research and tests and possibly one of my tests from my router to the Zyxel speedtest page is not valid. I have to look deeper into that when I will have time.

I have just replaced Connect Box 2 with Connect Box 3. It is configured as a “modem” and I connected port 4 (labeled as 2.5GBit) to the router with cable provided in the box. The router does detect 2.5 GBit ethernet. I’m not getting anything over 1024mbit though. Please help.

I’m using topton n100 based industrial PC with 4×2.5GBit ethernet ports.
It is connected with the ethernet cable that I got in the package to the port 4 of the Connect Box 3.
Opnsense reports WAN port with 2500Base-T <full-duplex>84.75.70.230

MarcinANowak Unfortunately, I’m not very good at OpenSense. If you have settings in your firewall that scan the network live, try disabling all network inspection tools. If the speed is OK then, try disabling a network scanning service again until the speed is bad. Then you may have found the service that is slowing down the line.

In terms of network cards required in order to achieve the full 2.5GBit speed, presume 10Gbe cards such as the Intel X550 that are backwards compatible with 2.5GBit or a dedicated 2.5GBit card is required achieve 2.5 Gbit with the Connect box 3? Is this same on DSL aswell as Fibre versions of these boxes?

tinterwebs Yes, the Intel card you mentioned should work, as it supports link aggregation and therefore also supports 5/2.5/1Gbit in addition to 10Gbit.
