Swiss websites defaulting to German

Hi, Swiss websites typically default to be displayed in German despite me being in the French part of Switzerland. I assume that’s because Sunrise ISP configuration, or is there something I can do it about?

It is possible that the browser language has not been set correctly. If you are using Google Chrome, here are the instructions on how to change the browser language.

Hi Daniele,

Thanks for the answer, but unfortunately it doesn’t work. I think that Sunrise servers are in German-speaking part of Switzerland, and that’s what is used by most websites instead of my location. IIUC the only solutions in this case is that website developers respect this: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/Accept-Language, but that’s beyond this ticket 😉

maszyman Do you have an example of what exactly is not working, so that we can test it here. Am I correct in assuming that you are accessing a website and that it is always in German?

If I type e.g. coop.ch or wingo.ch it always redirects to coop.ch/de and wingo.ch/de, respectively. So the webiste ignores my browser’s settings (fr-ch or en-us) and redirects me based on IP address of ISP provider (which happens not to be in my location).

maszyman In this case, the English language is missing on your system, which means that you have all pages in German (unless you have a language selection).

What browser and Windows version are you using?

I am on Fedora Linux 40, and testing on Brave and Firefox browsers.

I definitely have English language on my system.

I just noticed that you sent me https://whoer.net/de link. Was it on purpose? If I go to https://whoer.net, I see this:

Thank you. Yes, I’m aware that this is a common problem. As I said earlier, I believe the core problem is the fact that the websites do not respect user’s settings. I just wanted to make you aware of this and I was wondering if there’s something that can be done at the configuration level of ISP.
