Put device to modem mode

Salut, Je voudrais passer mon appareil en mode modem et commencer à utiliser mon propre routeur. J'ai trouvé les conseils pratiques sur le lever du soleil en ligne, mais je n'ai pas le menu de mode moderne disponible dans les paramètres de mon appareil, comme décrit. Quelqu'un pourrait-il aider? Selon certaines entrées du forum, cela pourrait être parce que j'ai IPv6 mais mon paramètre WAN affiche IPv4 en fait.

I would like to switch my device to modem mode and start using my own router. I found the how-to guidance on Sunrise online, but I don’t have the modern mode menu available in my device’s settings, as described.

Could someone help?

According to some forum entries, this might be because I have IPv6 but my WAN setting shows IPv4 actually.

Modem Mode is only available for Cable-connections. FIBRE connections don’t offer Modem Mode. The only option there, is to use DMZ.

Please check if DMZ is available on the Connect Box 3 settings. You’ll find it under Advanced settings > Security > DMZ

That’s quite unfortunate that the modem mode is unavailable for fiber.

I have DMZ as an option, and did search through the forum and Google how that would work (found your guidance in another thread as well).

I’m not sure if I want to go down that road of a double-NAT setup and overcomplicate my home network, which might be more prone to errors with this config.

Is modem mode planned for fiber in the future or does it have some limitations that completely block this functionality?

We do not know, what Sunrise is planning for the future.

The only thing we can do, is deal with the current situation as it is. I run my Connect Box 3 HFC in Router Mode with DMZ enabled.

I was rebuilding my home network, about two months before I was migrated to Sunrise. It was build with a 600/60Mbit/s connection in mind. So I ended up with a 2500/100Mbit/s connection, unable to make full use of it, because my home network is limited to 1Gbit/s. Running the Connect Box 3 with DMZ, allows me to use the full speed, without hassle on 1 computer, when needed. Switching from Router Mode to Modem Mode usually takes a couple of minutes and it’s a pain to do.

I don’t see the double NAT as a real problem. Just make sure the subnets are different. I was running tripple NATs on older network-setups and never had issues with it. Yeah it was overkill, but at that time I didn’t know better and was not familiar with VLANs.

At my office I run a double NAT by default. Using a DSL connection from a different ISP. They call it “IP passthrough”, it’s just DMZ with a dedicated subnet. The only thing not working from my own routers is the DDNS. VPN, web service and other services work totally fine.

DMZ sucks. Performance is impacted thanks to double-NAT.

And you can replace the Zyxel / Sunrise Fiber router with a XGS-PON SFP+ module.

All you need is some information that can be read / exported from the Zyxel router.

Would be lovely if Sunrise offered this option for everyone. As Sunrise is using the Swisscom fiber infrastructure and Swisscom has approved / certified some SFP+ ONT modules already.

If I google FS XGS-ONU-25-20NI as suggested in https://smma.ch/2024/07/16/sunrise-fs-xgs-onu-25-20ni/ , I find a XGSPON stick that costs 200 CHF alone. Is this really that expenseice or are there alternatives?

I used another stick from aliexpress. they already come with the 8311 community firmware.

They cost around 100-120$ with shipping (plus 20 CHF for tax and fees).

in addition you need a router with SFP+ slots.
