Hey pato,

thanks a lot, this a good hint, will do some research.

Could the culprit be a compatibility problem between OWC Dock’s Ethernet port and Internet Box Fiber one?

As I said, there is no way to see and/or tweak ethernet link parameters in Sunrise Box and if I change anything on the MacBook Pro side, I fear nothing happens. Therefore, I opted for auto-negotiation and everything seems perfect…

I can’t find the specifications for this box, I wonder if the ports can do more than 1 Gbps on the Fibre Box, or if they are limited to 1 Gbps. I suspect they can 10 Gbps, but without specs it’s hard to say.

Hello again,

of course LAN ports are 10G Base-T both on the Dock side and Internet Box Fiber Side.

The Dock is connected to the MacBook Pro via 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 upstream and the Dock’s built-in Ethernet Interface (Aquantia AQC107 chipset) uses the Thunderbolt protocol to communicate to host computer’s PCIe interface directly.

This is opposite to USB-C Dongles which do not connect to PCIe directly and may lead to performance degradation.

As I wrote in my first post, physical connection between devices is made with CAT 6a cable and a test using Sunrise provided original “10G Ethernet Cable” only does not improve performance.

If your hint is correct, there may be a macOS TCP Congestion Window parameter limiting bandwidth above 1.1 Gbps or a compatibility issue between Dock’s and Internet Box Fiber’s ethernet ports, despite solid 10G Base-T is negotiated.

Of course, a Sunrise infrastructure bottleneck is possible as well.

I am now investigating a way to tweak OS’s TCP parameters to see if anything changes…

Sorry was unclear, I was trying to find the specs of the fiber box, which don’t seem to exist (without knowing the exact model number).
But regardless of that, I’d be very happy with a stable 1.1 Gbps up/down, most servers can’t nor will provide much more speed than that at the moment.

OK, this a question for Sunrise ;-)

From what I can get into box’s GUI, it is a Sagemcom device with Hardware Revision 1 and firmware SG_SIB2_04.038.

The box is branded as “Sunrise Internet Box Fiber” (device product sticker), so I cannot say which exact Sagemcom model/product number is.

Today, I made some tests with Windows 10 and there is no change, so the Operating System is not the bottleneck.

About performance satisfaction/happiness…

… sure I’m pretty happy with this bandwidth but I am trying to figure out why a 10 Gbps advertised internet subscription is limited to about 1 Gbps.

Also, Ping (realtime application probe) is in the cablemodem domain, not fiber.

By the way, I work (do NOT play) with realtime remote applications (Radio/TV Broadcast) which will be soon connected to 10 Gb Fiber, so in the middle term this bandwidth cap will become an issue!

For comparison, I have a colleague in Zürich with a Mac, Swisscom subscription and a 2.5 Gbps link (soon upgraded to 10 Gbps). FTTH is the same XGS-PON as mine.

Results are: 2.35 Gbps Down/Up and 1 ms Ping.

I have seen in this forum people in Zürich with Sunrise fiber and the same Internet Box achieving 7.5-8 Gbps.

Ad I said, I’m just trying to debug this limitation…

Regarding this user guide owc-thunderbolt-pro-dock-web-guide.pdf (macsales.com) Page 4, what color does your LAN port indicate?
If its working on 10Gig it should be orange.

Sorry, I just saw, that you allready tried to work with 5Gig port speed and 2.5Gig…
Something is strange…do you have the same speed when you try it over wifi?

Then I’m out of ideas. It’s theoretically possible that you are hitting a limitation in the region, but it’s still a tad weird that it is so exact and not varying wildly.
I guess it’s time to do a few speed tests and then contact support about the restricted speed.

Yes, you can get good speeds with a 10Gbit XGS-PON connection. In a small village in Zurich Kanton I get this:

XGS-PON is a shared medium, and speeds depend on how many people are sharing the fiber. Although you always reaching the same limit sounds like a different issue.

In my building and area I don’t think there are so many XGS-PON connections that can justify a 5 to 8 fold performance decrease.

Can you please share your Internet Box Fiber firmware version and hardware revision?

I am in contact with Other World Computing and they are investigating the issue.

In the meantime, I am looking at alternative products and I found this one:

I read one comment from a user using this adapter with a Fiber connection and results are good (5…8 Gbps).

Sonnet’s adapter user manual also gives useful tips for 10G “fine tuning”:

. leave Full Duplex on, turn off Flow Control

. set MTU to 9000 (Jumbo Frame)

I have modified these parameters on the computer side, but since there is no way to set up the same on Sunrise Internet Box Fiber, these changes have no effect.

Before buying the Sonnet anyway, I will wait for OWC’s reply and maybe take the Thunderbolt Pro Dock in Zürich Oerlikon to a a colleague who has solid 10 Gb/s Swisscom connection. Then, I will know where the issue is…

Hello everybody,

just to let you know that my issue is now solved!

No technical issues after all…

It was simply a subscription mismatch: I asked for the “Internet XL” subscription and therefore was expecting this, but during UPC to Sunrise Fiber migration I got “Internet L” (capped at 1 Gbps down/up) instead!

I don’t know if it was my mistake or on Sunrise side, but now I was able to quickly upgrade to the XL flavour and now my connection is performing as expected.
