Thank you for your reply, Ahmet.
So there’s several errors made UPC’s engineers, then:
1. A first error in the Requirements Specification
If I go to bed and I switch off my phone’s Wifi AND data, it’s because I don’t want to be disturbed by messaging apps in the middle of the night. If UPC Connect switches on Wifi I then am disturbed by messages arriving on my phone. UPC Connect should not try to switch on Wifi if Wifi has been manually switched off.
2. A second error in the Requirements Specification
If data connection has been manually switched off, UPC Connect should also not try to switch on Wifi! Especially not in the middle of the night without user approval!
3. Breach of privacy
There are some apps that may provide location information. If I switch off data and Wifi, maybe it’s because I’m at a location where I don’t want to be tracked. If Wifi is switched on without my knowledge then possibly some data may be released that I don’t want to.
Example: I tell my wife I have to fly across the world for a few days when I’m in fact spending a few days at my mistress in the next village. If my wife messages me on say, WhatsApp, while I’m supposed to be flying and she receives acknowledgement that the message arrived on my phone while I’m supposed to be in the air she may be quite surprised – and so will I when she starts calling me via WhatsApp while I thought my phone wasn’t connected to my mistress’ wifi. Big consequences caused by UPC…
4. Insufficient information of customer
UPC does not inform clients that their phone’s wifi may be hijacked by UPC Connect, day and night. That’s unacceptable.
5. Strange effects
A few days ago, I removed permission to UPC Connect to play with my wifi. Last night and this morning my mobile phone suddenly wouldn’t connect to my Wifi anymore. I don’t know if it’s related but I saw on my phone’s wifi connection settings that it was controlled by UPC Connect. I had to uninstall UPC Connect and reboot the box to get my phone to reconnect to Wifi.
Seriously, UPC, you can do better! Please review your Requirements Specifications.
