Fraudsters are sending out massive emails in the alleged name of Sunrise, claiming that a refund can be claimed. The UPC Switzerland GmbH logo is also being misused recently.
The fraudsters send out emails decorated with the Sunrise logo, informing potential victims that they allegedly have a credit balance with Sunrise which should be refunded.
The scammers’ goal is to obtain the victims’ credit card data and thus initiate a transaction. When the recipient clicks on the link in the email, he or she ends up on a deceptively genuine copy of the Sunrise portal. After successfully logging in, the recipient will be asked to enter their credit card details. Afterwards, a payment is initiated immediately.
The fraudsters now try to get hold of the financial institution’s security code transmitted by SMS and thus circumvent the two-factor authentication. The fraud victim is redirected to a fake website, where he or she is asked to enter the security code. The security code can now be read by the fraudsters and is used for the fraudulent transaction. The money is debited to the victim.
Under no circumstances should the receipt of the email be confirmed or even contact be made with the fraudsters.
In general, links in emails should never be clicked on if you do not know the sender with 100% certainty. If information has already been entered, the respective credit card company should be contacted immediately to block the card and thus prevent further damage. In addition, the access data to the respective online portal should be changed.
