Hi everyone, I have a Fairphone 4 with a prepaid eSIM. I am experiencing a problem where I cannot receive any normal SMS messages. The issue is: Mobile data works correctly (LTE).Phone calls work normally.RCS messages work.Incoming SMS are never received.The sender does not get any error message; the SMS seems to be delivered normally from their side.Before the problem started, SMS reception was working correctly. Things I already tried: Checked APN settings (including IMS APN).Tested different network modes (LTE only / NR-LTE).Reset network settings.Cleared the SMS app cache.Checked the Android testing menu (##4636##), but I cannot find IMS registration status. At this point I suspect either: a Sunrise eSIM/provisioning issue,a modem/baseband configuration issue,or a Fairphone 4 telephony issue. Has anyone experienced similar behaviour with Fairphone 4 + Sunrise eSIM?Any ideas for further troubleshooting would be appreciated. Thanks!

**Update / correction:** I need to correct my previous post: the issue is not limited to SMS. I have now noticed that incoming and outgoing voice calls are also not working: * Incoming calls do not arrive. * Outgoing calls fail. * Incoming SMS are not received. * LTE data still works. * RCS still works. So the problem seems to be related to voice/SMS network registration rather than only SMS reception. Sorry for the incomplete information in my first post.

Since data and RCS work but calls and SMS fail, maybe your network registration for voice services is blocked. Could it be that your ID verification is incomplete or expired? Please check your MySunrise portal to see if the ID check is missing. If your verification is fine, please contact the hotline at (0800 707 707) to have it checked. Cheerio cosmo

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked my MySunrise portal, but I could not find any information about ID verification or a missing verification status.

Additional diagnostic information: In the Android testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*) I found: * Voice service: In service * Voice network type: LTE * Voice call status: inactive This seems to indicate that the phone is connected to LTE, but voice service is not active.

@"Roabembauck13"#p317521 Could you please check whether you have VoLTE enabled or disabled, and either enable or disable it? **Here are the instructions Enabling VoLTE:** Open Settings on your phone. Tap Network & internet. Select SIMs and choose your mobile network operator. Ensure Preferred Network Type is set to allow 4G/LTE. Find and turn on the 4G Calling or VoLTE switch. hanks for your help. Just to clarify, I do have access to My Sunrise. I use another phone to receive the SMS for two-factor authentication. Before reading your reply, I had already ordered a replacement eSIM myself. However, since yesterday evening, the My Sunrise portal has been showing the following status: > **"Der Prozess zum Sperren/Entsperren ist in Bearbeitung."** The process appears to be stuck, and I have not yet received a new QR code or any further update. Could you please check whether the replacement process is still pending or if something needs to be reset on your side? Thank you!

**Update: Partial workaround after contacting Sunrise support** I spent more than an hour on the phone with a Sunrise support agent. We reset the eSIM and tried several different settings and troubleshooting steps. We eventually found a partial workaround, although the issue is unfortunately not completely solved. First of all, **VoLTE needs to be disabled**. After every phone restart — and also whenever I notice that SMS are no longer being received — I have to do the following: 1. Open the Phone app. 2. Dial `*#*#4636#*#*`. 3. Open **Phone information**. 4. Find **Set preferred network type**. 5. Change it from **NR/LTE** to **LTE only**. 6. Wait a couple of minutes. 7. Change it back to **NR/LTE**. Doing the opposite (LTE only → NR/LTE) also seems to trigger it.

I had also had done an official support request, but unfortunately received an answer that was related to problems with voice calling instead of SMS. I just replied to them providing more information on how to introduce the probelm (in my case the airplane mode robustly introduces the malfunction) and the workaround (disabling VoLTE and changing from 5G to LTE and back). I will keep you updated about their response.

Hi @yolina123, thanks for your contribution! Before switching between 5G/4G/3G/2G and 4G/3G/2G, you need to disable VoLTE, otherwise it won’t work. Once the SMS messages start coming in, you can enable VoLTE again.

Thanks @fairphonefriend for the link to the /e/OS forum. It helps me understand better what happened to me. I had /e/OS 4.0 installed, and then at the beginning of July I installed version 4.1, which is when the SMS problems started.

I waited for a patch for a few days, and then I found the workaround we all know. At the beginning of August, since /e/OS still hadn’t fixed the issue, I decided (reluctantly) to switch back to Android.

Now it seems that my timing wasn’t particularly lucky, since since the end of July the Fairphone 4 + Android + Sunrise combination has been experiencing the same problem.

If I’m not mistaken, Android released a security patch for the Fairphone 4 at the end of July.

Here yet another case! I have a physical Sunrise prepaid SIM card and a Swisscom eSIM. I can make and receive phone calls with both SIMs, I can send and receive SMS via Swisscom eSIM, but not via the physical Sunrise SIM (which is really annoying because I need it for 2-factor authentification…). I was in a Sunrise shop, and the guy put my Sunrise SIM into another phone and all the SMS came in.

I’v tried the toggling described above, but I still can’t send or receive Sunrise SMS. Help with this issue would be highly appreciated!

Set VoLTE to disabled.
Go to the preferred network type and toggle between 5G/4G/3G/2G and 4G/3G/2G (or vice versa).
After waiting a minute or two, calls and incoming SMS start working again.

Yes, I have tried this. I have also tried what yolina123 described with the *#*#4636#*#*. Nothing worked.

if you have time it would be great to gather more info:
- did you restart before trying the workaround?
- did Sunrise do any refresh or so on their end? (in my case a lot has been tried before I luckily found @Roabembauck13 ’s hints here)

update on my ticket with Fairphone: they confirmed that this is not a hardware issue but related to compatibilty/provisioning. however, they haven’t given any hints yet that go beyond what has already been mentioned here.

I have done many restarts in this context… But now I did a restart AFTER the toggling and this seems to have done the trick - the SMS have come in! Thanks.

No, I haven’t had Sunrise do a refresh. After my visit to the Sunrise shop I was rather discouraged because their conclusion was that it was not their problem, but a problem with the phone.

Hello, I have the exact same case!

Fairphone 4, Android 15, Yallo network provider, physical SIM card, everything worked well for a couple of years.

A few weeks ago (somewhere around end of July), SMS stopped working. I haven’t noticed any issues with phone calls and internet (therefore I’m not sure when exactly SMSes stopped working).
The workaround described here (turning VoLTE off and toggling prefered network type between 5G/4G/3G/2G and 4G/3G/2G) does work! But I need to redo this trick after every phone boot, as many other on this thread.

Thanks to everyone for reporting, and I’m waiting for a permanent fix. 🙏

Fairphone replied that they are investigating the carrier’s profile compability. They also suggested to work with Sunrise Support: “Please ask them to verify your eSIM’s SMSC (Short Message Service Center) number and to push an updated carrier configuration to your line.”

I went with that info to a store and they created a ticket with the IT team. Now awaiting another round of back and forth, fingers crossed.

An update on my end as well: I also started having issues with my internet connection and phone calls. Restarting the phone and doing the hack a few times solves it, for some time at least.

I suspect these issues are related with the workaround hack, since I started having these issues right after I discovered this hack on this topic. @Roabembauck13 maybe that’s what happened to you too, since you reported on the phone calls and internet after reporting on the SMS issue.

I’m even more sure that we all have the same issue here, I’m really looking forward for the solution!
