Use a standalone third party modem + router on a Sunrise plan

Throughout the years I have been very unhappy with the reliability and capabilities of their hardware in general, I sat in more calls than I can count, but now that I am once again having multiple problems, I just want to either take this into my own hands or switch providers completely.

Have been working in IT for a long time (though not in Networking) and have no issues if I have to configure a lot of stuff myself, I will go through the trouble if it means I won’t need to call them anymore.

I am looking to see if I can completely replace their router + modem with my own solution. I would rather not have their hardware installed at all, to minimize failure points.

I am looking for suggestions if (and how) this can be done. If you want to throw in any personal experiences with certain products, that would be greatly appreciated too!

Since this is a pure “customers helping customers” forum, we unfortunately do not have any access to internal system configurations or network tools.

Depending on your specific internet access technology, the options vary significantly. If you are on a DSL connection or a Fiber Point to Point (AON) line, you can use your own standalone third party modem. However, if you are on a Fiber XGS connection, Sunrise strictly blocks third party hardware, meaning you must use the Connect Box 3 and configure a DMZ to put your own router behind it since a true bridge mode is not supported. For HFC cable connections, your own modem is blocked as well, but you can contact the hotline to switch to IPv4 and activate the built in bridge mode.
