As mobile devices become smaller and smarter, the SIM cards used to connect to mobile networks are also changing. eSIMs are becoming the new standard, while physical SIMs are gradually being phased out.
Why eSIM?
Immediate activation: eSIMs can be activated immediately without having to wait for a physical SIM card to be sent, which usually takes several days.
Convenience: There is no need to handle small SIM cards or use tools to insert them, which can be a problem for older and visually impaired people in particular.
Security: If your device is stolen, eSIMs can be replaced immediately, which is a big advantage when traveling abroad.
Space-saving: eSIMs do not require a physical slot, making them ideal for small devices such as smartwatches.
Sustainable: eSIM is a more environmentally friendly solution (fewer CO2 equivalents for production and transport).
Dual SIM support: Use two phone numbers (e.g., for business and personal use) on the same device.
Free: Until further notice, switching to an eSIM is free of charge.
Why physical SIMs are becoming obsolete
Manual process: Physical SIM cards must be shipped, which usually takes several days, and must be inserted into the device manually, which can be a problem, especially for older people and people with visual impairments.
Fees: Customers often pay a fee for physical SIM cards, while eSIMs can be provided free of charge.
Future compatibility: Future devices may no longer support physical SIM cards.
