Advertised 100mb upload speed not available in bridge mode?

The only thing connected to the UPC modem is a pfsense firewall, behind which lies my private network.

I want to run the UPC modem in bridge mode, but doing so restricts my upload speed to 10mb/sec - only 10% of the advertised upload speed.

Testing with the modem in router mode, I see my upload speeds magically increase to over 80mb/sec. This is closer to your advertised values.

I get the feeling this bridge mode restriction is intentional by the UPC network engineers. I would love to be proven wrong, but I simply cannot get anything more than 10mb/sec upload speed in bridge mode.

Does anyone else see this behavior too?

I found the following on the Internet:

“If you recently encounter limited speed acceleration, or unable to reach maximum connection speed, please try to disable the following features: AiProtection, Traffic Analyzer, Web History, Adaptive QoS, Game boost, Web & apps filters, bandwidth monitor, Mobile Game Mode to maintain the optimal internet speed.”

Hi Daniele,

If I set the modem to bridge mode, and only connect a Unix machine to it, I see the hard limit of 10mb upload speed. Most of the stuff you mentioned is not applicable, and even if they were, there is no way they are consuming 90% of the upload speed.

This has to be a hard limit. I’m surprised nobody else has noticed this. Or am I the exception in running the modem in bridge mode..

No issues here with 100 Mbps upload.
Just tested this now, through my own wireless and running the CB2 in bridge mode:

That is very interesting, thank you for posting. I never get that kind of download or upload speed. So if you are in bridge mode this suggests the problem lies with the network to my house.

I’ve already received a second UPC modem, which did nothing to change the problem. I’ve spoken with the UPC help desk and they’ve run out of options. They say it is not possible to speak directly with a network engineer and my only option is to use this discussion board.

I don’t see a way forward without further involvement/escalation on the UPC side. Are there any UPC staff monitoring these forums?

@Daniele_Sunrise is actually an employee of Sunrise.
I assume you tested those speeds via cable?
Maybe you have a broken LAN cable between the router and your firewall, that would be very typical of such low upload speeds.
For comparison:

Can you do some speedtests as documented here and publish your ID: https://www.sunrise.ch/en/general/speedtest
Please do it once in bridge mode with the PC directly attached to the CB2 and once in router mode and lastly once in bridge mode behind your firewall.

Thank you, you’ve given me some ideas to go on. I need to do some tests first, I think I might have found an issue
